3 Reasons to Get an Air Purifier for Air Quality

Did you know that the air quality in your home may be worse than the air quality outside? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the levels of indoor air pollutants may be 2-5 times higher than those outside, and occasionally more than 100 times the outdoor concentration. That’s because indoor spaces restrict the flow of air to the greater outdoor expanse, causing pollutants to build up.

Air purifiers can sanitize contaminated air, creating a cleaner living environment for you and your family. Here are 3 reasons why it’s prudent to get an air purifier for your home or office.

1. Helps Neutralize Unpleasant Odors

Some of the bad odors you experience in your home are caused by chemical compounds from liquids and solids floating in the air. These compounds may have originated from products within your home e.g. laundry detergents, cooking oils, bathing salts, etc., and merged to form a foul scent.

Air purifiers, in particular HEPA filters with UV-C light, can destroy these minute volatile compounds leaving your home smelling pleasant and fresh. In other instances, the odor in your home may be caused by microorganisms from pets, as well as bacteria living in mold and mildew. These microorganisms can also be destroyed using the strong ultraviolet light present in some air filters.

2. Eliminates Harmful Chemical Substances From Your Home

If you live close to a road, or in an area where there is high motor traffic, toxic fumes such as nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide are bound to find their way into your home. Long-term exposure to these gases increases the risk of lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses.

Carbon air filters can remove these harmful gases through adsorption: a process that involves trapping the gases on a bed of charcoal a.k.a. activated carbon. Not to be confused with absorption where pollutants adhere to the outside of material, adsorption in comparison is more effective in trapping fluids because the gases become chemically bonded inside the carbon structure making it impossible for them to escape.

Just be sure to use enough carbon in the filter with a high saturation capacity for more effectiveness. That’s because more carbon usually translates to more adsorption sites for gases to get bonded to.

3. Improves the Quality of Sleep

Air filters can eliminate allergens in the air such as pollen and dust which irritate nasal passages and can make breathing difficult during sleep. They can also get rid of allergens such as mold and fungi that cause a sore throat, itchy eyes, a runny nose, and other symptoms that make it hard to fall asleep and maintain a deep sleep cycle.

Along with the purification of air, some air purifiers emit “pink noise,” a background sound with lower frequencies similar to the sounds found in nature, such as ocean waves, waterfalls, and leaves rustling. When administered at night they amplify slower brain waves and help people fall asleep faster and sleep deeper.
