IS Bigger Really Better?
In this, bigger or more is better, world that we live in, we’re always seeking bigger and more. That tends to hold true with our central air conditioning units as well. If my current unit is cooling the house subpar or even good, then a bigger unit should cool it better and a lot faster. Therefore, it should also be more efficient. Here are the pros and cons of an oversized air conditioning unit.
REDUCED RUN TIME
Your unit will satisfy the desired temperature of your thermostat a lot faster.
UNCOMFORTABLE HUMIDITY LEVEL
By your unit cutting off so fast, it will not run long enough to dehumidify properly. Even though the thermostat will have satisfied, the humidity level will be high, leaving an uncomfortable feel.
WEAR & TEAR ON YOUR EQUIPMENT
Your unit will cycle on and off more frequently. It takes a lot more power to start your unit than to maintain, causing a potentially higher energy bill, and it is also hard on the equipment.
Though your unit may satisfy the desired temperature much faster, it will still leave your house with an uncomfortable feel, unless you live in the desert with low to no humidity. You also have greater chances of breakdowns and shortened equipment life. Though your unit may struggle during the hottest days of the year, it is better to be undersized 3 or 4 days out the year than to be over-sized 361.
